BirthQuakes: Rising Out of the Rubble

"Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of the overcoming of it."
—Helen Keller
Many of us are reeling from the tragic news of the mass shooting in Las Vegas. Our hearts are heavy and once again, we find ourselves in a collective state of shock and disbelief. Many are reporting feeling helpless as yet another intense event has shaken our sense of well being and safety in the world.

What can we do in the face of such tragedy and chaos and horrific events taking place in our world? How do we keep our hope alive, maintain a sense of equilibrium…believe in possibilities of healing and unity when our spirits feel weakened from one wave after another of painful, distressing news? Many people are already dealing with big personal challenges and the weight of the world on top of it can be soul crushing and can cause one to feel immobilized by it all.

Even those with regular spiritual practices who are committed to a path of peace, higher possibilities and unity can crumble under the intensity. But still we rise and we must rise just as the people affected by the destructive hurricanes are in the process of rising and rebuilding, we rise from within and reach for something or someone to help us restore our sense of well being.

We check our emotional, spiritual foundations and notice where are body/mind/soul system took the greatest hit from the external pressures of life and we get to work repairing from the inside out.

The inner repair work is different than maintenance work. In other words, you may have a regular practice of meditation, connecting with friends, yoga, daily walks, and perhaps journaling that helps you stay balanced and helps you function and be with what you are already dealing with on a daily basis…which is maintenance work.

Or maybe you don’t have anything in place that holds you through  all the daily rumbles and your maintenance work has just been surviving the best you can and now you’re noticing that your energetic dwelling that used to seem livable is now unstable.

One of my “spiritual mentors”, Iyanla Vanzant refers to these big life events, personal and collective as “birthquakes”. Events that shake us to our core and cause painful contractions as life tries to find its way out of the darkness and rubble of the human experience into the light of a new possibilities and new beginnings.

During these times we must reach for something more. More healing practices, additional tools of transformation, greater inspiration, mental/emotional/spiritual support, we must reach beyond what is to create what can be! We need to hold a vision for healing and restoration within ourselves and for the greater good of all. We are all connected; we are the microcosm of the macrocosm.

By taking care of yourself, restoring your sense of well being, committing to your own healing, you are contributing to the greater good of all. It must start from within us and ripple out. To be clear, I am not advocating not reaching out to help others, for some (like me) that is a big part of our purpose and like breath, it is an essential component to our being.

What I am suggesting is that it is important to not step over yourself denying your own needs of healing AND that in taking the time to restore your own foundation you come from a stronger place in supporting others and in helping to heal the world!

So, how’s your foundation? Take a moment to turn within and assess the damages. Are you feeling heavy in your heart? Is your body holding pain/grief/anger/fear? Is your normal affect different? Are you feeling sad, helpless, discouraged? Do you need support? Or can you trust your intuition to guide you to some new practices of soul restoration?

One way to access your own wise, inner healer is to befriend yourself. What would you suggest to a best friend who is sitting smack dab in the middle of the pain and challenges that you are experiencing?

Place your hand over your heart, take a few breaths in and ask yourself, “what do you need?” or “how can I help you today?” Listen to what springs up and honor that knowing by taking action on behalf of YOU!

Yesterday, after going through some of my regular (not as regular as I need!) practices/rituals of meditating, praying, grounding and setting intention, I was still present to a lot of grief and felt really imbalanced. I listened to what I needed. I needed to go to the river, one of my sacred places that offers deeper restoration of my spirit! Going to the river and practicing a process of releasing all that I’m holding is one of my go to tools when there is some heavy lifting required.

Sitting in prayer by the river yesterday, I was reminded of some advice I once heard from one of my teachers, Reverend Michael Beckwith.  He advised only tuning into the news briefly to get your prayer assignment. I realized in that moment, that I had been watching too much news and was soaking in too much of the pain. Those of us who are highly sensitive need not dive into the world to feel the enormity of what is happening, we just need to dip our toes in to feel the collective temperature of current events.

This doesn’t mean we turn our backs on what is happening, rather it means that we strengthen our backs by staying connected to what supports us and from there flow our prayers and take some action.

So, what supports you through these turbulent times? Is it time for you to reach for more? Time to bulk up your daily practices to fortify your being? I encourage you to take the time to restore and rebuild from within, to offer yourself what you need to rise with increased hope and courage.

It’s the perfect time for some inner remodeling and restoration.  It is also a perfect time to create a vision for higher possibilities for yourself and for the world and then take some action!  Shift from being a reactionary into what I call a "Visionactionary" - one who creates a vision and then takes action!

May peace and grace be with you, and all of us, as we do our heavy lifting out of the rubble of our lives and collective experience. I’m holding a vision for all of us in which we are all thriving, healed, whole, living from our strengths/gifts, bringing the best of who we are individually and collectively and living in harmony.  I hold this vision in my heart with gratitude and awe of our innate resiliency!
