Who Do You Think You Are?

Are you living from your soul’s potential?  Are you on track with your purpose?  Or are you playing small?  Holding back? Feeling disconnected from your unique mission in life?  Are you stuck in your “comfort zone” afraid to expand your possibilities?  If so, why?  And when did you first notice that you were starting to disappear from your
own life?

If you were in a room full of kids aged 7 years or younger and asked them, “what do you want to be when you grow up?”  Every hand would immediately rise lifted from a heart full of joyful possibilities!  You could ask more specifically, “how many of you are singers?”  “Artists?” Again, each hand would proudly reach for the sky with the delight of having their potential seen.  We don’t need to go too far forward on the aging timeline to see a sharp decline in positive, enthusiastic responses to those questions.

Even before the rebellious teenage years bumps up against the box of conformity, the light of our unique expression has already begun to dim.  The thought “who do you think you are?” starts to shadow the brightness of our shiny, untarnished potential and dulls us until we start to forget who we truly are.

I believe that all of us come into the world with a unique purpose and the potential to fulfill it.  In an ideal world, we would all have had families that helped us not only recognize our potential, but also nurtured and encouraged it so we could thrive! Many of us had a different experience and at some point, realized we needed to hide our potential to meet our basic needs.

The most urgent needs to get met are the need to be safe, to be accepted, to survive!  And to different degrees, that is what we all have done, survived by adapting. Instead of receiving a sense that it was safe to be seen in our full potential, we received messages either directly or indirectly that it was safer to play small, to not make waves, to fit in and just get by.

We began to hide what we thought may not be accepted, loved and welcome.  We began to hide who we truly are and we slowly, over time stopped raising our hands, stopped raising our voices, stopped connecting to those joyful possibilities tucked in our hearts.
So how do we reclaim our potential?  Reconnect to our purpose? Get back on track with our lives?  The simple and most powerful healing solution is to offer to ourselves what we most needed growing up in order to thrive.

Imagine a wilted plant in a small pot that while it is still alive, it’s barely surviving. It’s not able to grow into its full capacity because the environment it is in isn’t able to support its full potential.  When the plant is transferred into supportive soil, watered regularly and placed in an area that encourages its growth, it quickly returns to its maximum potential and begins to thrive!

Now, I need to add that this is not about blaming our parents, or feeling sorry for ourselves, wishing we were born in “better” environments.  No, this is simply about shining the light of awareness on our current inner landscape and noticing where our potential might be sitting in a corner in a tiny little pot without adequate nurturing and support to grow and then cultivating the willingness to become devoted caretakers of our own soul garden!

After years of dedicating my life to nurturing soul potential in others, I had some health challenges that woke me out of what I call a “fear cocoon”.  A place I lived within for years playing it safe, stuck inside with fear of being fully seen even though I believed I was living my purpose and in part I was, just not full on!  I often felt my soul trying to pull me out of that limited place and calling me back to claim my full potential.  I reflected on how often I hid to feel safe.  I remembered events in my life in which I made decisions to be who I thought others wanted me to be and not who I was meant to be.

One memory that unlocked some of my frozen potential energy, was remembering that as a little girl I wanted to be a writer.  When I was 9 years old I sent away for a college home study course.  One day I came home from elementary school to find my very upset, fear held, widowed, single mother losing it when I walked in the door.  She began yelling at me (which she rarely did!) for ordering something we couldn’t afford and reminding me that I was only 9 years old, and “not a writer!”

Now, I can see this event from my mom’s perspective and offer her absolute grace and forgiveness. But for years I let that little girl and my potential stay trapped inside of me believing that she could not “afford” to write and I lived from an unconscious, erroneous belief that perhaps even just the desire to write would upset people I loved.

None of that is true today and it wasn’t true in the past, but that is what I made that event mean.  I allowed that fear generated belief to hold me captive until the moment I sat down and decided to give that little girl space to grow.  She grows every time I sit down to write, every time I say "yes" to something that brings me joy and every time I give myself space to play!  She grows in my heart with love, encouragement and nurturing.  And when I forget to offer all that is needed for myself to grow, she reminds me by throwing a pity party!

I invite you to join me by reclaiming your own soul’s potential!  Are you ready to be who you wanted to be before you started to believe you couldn’t? To be seen and accepted as the unique expression of potential that you are? To be YOU?

Imagine yourself as a child still dancing freely with your potential and possibilities. What brought you joy?  What did you dream about?  What did you want to be when you grew up? And then be aware of when you started to hide your potential. Take an action today that will revive that potential.  Be willing to offer yourself better inner living conditions with a foundation of love and acceptance to sprout possibilities from! Provide your soul with a daily watering of nurturing and encouragement and give yourself space and time to grow into the fullness of your being!

And if you happen to hear yourself thinking “who do you think you are?” when attempting what your soul is calling you to do, just imagine your inner child springing forward from your nurtured soul garden, joyfully raising its hand high in the air, grateful for the opportunity to be seen, to be invited to play in your world through you, boldly answering, “I am potential yet to be expressed!”  Yes, you are!

Yes, we all are!
